Copyright is defined as the "exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell or distribute the matter and form of something, such as a literary, musical, or artistic work" (Copyright).

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is when someone takes another person's original work and claims it as their own. There are two different types of plagiarism and they are deliberate and accidental plagiarism. These two types are described in the first image below.
Fair Use
Fair use is a "legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances" (Office).

How to Avoid Plagiarism
One way to avoid plagiarism is to properly cite the resources used in papers and projects. There are a few questions to ask yourself when using a source on whether or not to cite as shown in the image below.
If you are not sure how to cite a source, there are multiple websites that can be used to help a student properly cite their sources such as Purdue Owl, Easy Bib, or Son of Citation Machine.
